My Current Practice
Through removing any subject or meaning, I aim to create something that is beautiful in it’s simple complexity and perfect imperfection.
My layered grids combine my love of aged, worn and imperfect surfaces with that of simple geometric shapes and lines. I'm looking for the sweet spot between order and chaos, connection and contrast, using layers of marks and colour.
These current individual prints reflect a return to my love of simple geometric shapes, first explored whilst studying at Norwich School of Art and Design, through process and material experimentation, combining collagraph, intaglio and collage.
My use of discarded Tetra Pak style cartons to make the printing plates rather than traditional more permanent materials, means I’m able to work more intuitively and respond to results during the inking and printing process, embracing discoveries in accidents and imperfections. Combined with the inclusion of old papers such as sheet music and antique books, this also satisfies my concern for reducing waste in my creative practice.
Through layering multiple plates and combining techniques and materials, the hand printed results and possibilities are usually a unique and delicious surprise.
I work from my studio in Stockbridge and at Edinburgh Printmakers.

How I Got Here
I was born and bought up on the Mid Wales coast. I studied Visual Studies at Norwich School of Art and Design where, influenced by minimalist artists such as Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt, my degree show consisted of a series of large canvases of pink and white grids. On returning to Wales I won the Oriel Newtown Open Award, their People’s Choice award, and had work in the inaugural Wales Drawing Biennale as well as various private galleries.
To supplement my income I worked in various arts admin and education roles in galleries and museums, was a primary school teacher for a time, then thanks to a ‘mixed blessing’ of health reasons, decided to return to my artwork, moving up to Edinburgh to be nearer bigger mountains and family.
As I lived and worked in the Georgian New Town I was inspired by the surrounding architecture, and I became known for my mixed media and collaged works of the crescents and tenements. Driven by a concern to minimise waste, and a love of aged and worn surfaces, I collected and utilised old books, sheet music and maps, continuously exploring different ways of layering and combining them with multiple materials and techniques such as screen printing and mono print.
I have supported myself as a full time artist for the past 12 years, been regularly selected to show in the RSA, SSA and RSW Opens, had a number of solo exhibitions at private galleries, and completed numerous private and corporate commissions.
